Takamatsu’s biggest summer festival climaxes with around 6,000 fireworks launched over the Seto Inland Sea.

Overview

The Sanuki Takamatsu Festival is the largest summer event in Kagawa’s capital, filling the city’s central parks and the Sunport waterfront with stages, dancing and food. Its headline act is the “Dondon Takamatsu” fireworks show, when roughly 6,000 shells are fired from a breakwater in Takamatsu Port and burst over the Seto Inland Sea. Musical fireworks and a grand dance round out three lively days in mid-August.

When & Where

12–14 August 2026. The main fireworks display runs on the evening of 13 August (approximately 20:15–20:45) over Takamatsu Port; a grand dance follows on 14 August. Venues include Chuo Park, Chuo-dori and Sunport Takamatsu.

Getting There

The fireworks area is roughly a 10-minute walk from JR Takamatsu Station and about 5 minutes from Kotoden Takamatsu-Chikko Station. Takamatsu is the gateway to Shikoku by train over the Seto-Ohashi Bridge and by ferry across the Inland Sea.

What to Expect

Expect musical fireworks choreographed to music, large shells up to around 8 inches across lighting the harbour, plus street dancing, stage events and rows of festival stalls during the day. The seaside setting at Sunport gives the fireworks an open, reflective backdrop.

Tickets & Access

Watching from the public waterfront and parks is free. Some paid or reserved viewing areas may be offered for the fireworks; general spots along Sunport are open to all but fill up early.
