For ten nights every August, more than twenty thousand candles turn Nara Park into a landscape of small, wavering flames.
Overview
Nara Tokae (なら燈花会) is a summer candle festival staged across the historic heart of Nara. Rather than floodlighting monuments, the organisers set out thousands of small cups of candlelight along ponds, lawns and temple approaches, so the park is lit almost entirely by flame.
The name refers to the flower-shaped bud of wax that forms on a burning wick, long regarded in Japan as a sign of good fortune. It is a quiet, slow-moving event: people walk, sit on the grass, and watch the light change rather than follow a parade.
Because the venues sit inside Nara Park, the deer, Kofuku-ji pagoda and Sarusawa Pond all form part of the scenery. It pairs naturally with a daytime visit to Todai-ji or Kasuga Taisha.
When and Where
The 2026 edition ran from 5 to 14 August, with candles lit each evening from about 19:00 until 21:30. Nine separate venues take part, including Kofuku-ji, Sarusawa Pond and the 52 Steps, the front of the Nara National Museum, Ukimido, Asajigahara, Ukigumo-enchi, the Nara Kasugano International Forum Iraka, and Ishiakari-no-komichi.
Two venues open on restricted dates: the Todai-ji venue on 13 and 14 August only, and the Kasuga Taisha approach on 14 August only. The festival is held in light rain but can be cancelled in bad weather.
What to Expect
Each venue has its own character, so the usual approach is to walk a loop rather than pick one spot.
- Over 20,000 candles are lit across the park each night.
- The Sarusawa Pond venue frames the five-storey pagoda of Kofuku-ji reflected in water.
- At Ukigumo-enchi and Ukishima, visitors can place and light their own candle cup in the “Ikkyaku Itto” participation programme, with reception from 19:00 to 21:00.
- Asajigahara and Ukimido are the widest, most open settings, where the candle lines run across open lawn.
- Nara Park deer wander freely through several of the venues after dark.
Tickets and Admission
Viewing the candle venues is free of charge. A fee applies to the “Ikkyaku Itto” candle-placing programme, but the amount was not stated on the official listing at the time of writing.
Paths through the park are largely flat and paved, though some venues sit on grass and gravel. Organisers ask visitors to arrive by public transport, as the surrounding streets become extremely congested.
Tips for Visitors
- Arrive shortly before 19:00 to see the lighting begin, and stay past 20:00 when the sky is fully dark and the flames read strongest.
- Start at Sarusawa Pond and work north toward Ukimido and Asajigahara; the crowds thin as you move away from the station side.
- Bring a light layer even in August — the park is warm but breezy near the water — and wear shoes suited to grass and gravel.
- Do not use flash near the deer, and keep candles away from clothing and bags when placing your own.
