Kuroe Festival 2026: Guide, Tickets & Access

The old lacquerware quarter streetscape at Kuroe, Kainan, Wakayama

Kansai · WakayamaMarket

A century-old night market on a single lacquerware street in Kainan, held every year on 14 August — the evening the craftsmen came home for Obon in new wooden clogs.

Overview

Geta-ichi (下駆市) is the night market of Kuroe, the old lacquerware quarter of Kainan City in Wakayama. Kainan City states it has run for over a century; some accounts put it closer to 150 years. The name means “clog market”, and the origin is specific: in the Edo period, lacquer craftsmen returned to their home villages for the Bon holiday wearing new wooden geta, and a market grew up to supply them.

It occupies Kawabata-dori, roughly 200 metres of street through the heart of the old quarter, for one evening only. Recent editions typically draw over 30,000 people.

When and Where

Date: 14 August, every year (2026: Friday 14 August — already held at the time of writing).
Hours: approximately 18:00–22:00.
Venue: Kawabata-dori, Kuroe, Kainan City, Wakayama.
Nearest station: Kuroe Station on the JR Kisei (Kinokuni) Line, about 15 minutes on foot.

Getting There

Kuroe is a short local-train ride south of Wakayama Station on the JR Kisei Line. From Kuroe Station it is about a fifteen-minute walk to Kawabata-dori. The date falls squarely in the Obon travel peak, so reserve seats on limited express services into Wakayama well ahead.

What to Expect

The market itself is a straightforward street fair — food stalls, toy stalls, and in recent years a sake festival featuring local breweries. What makes it worth the detour is the setting.

Kuroe’s streetscape is unusual: the old houses stand at an angle to the street in a distinctive sawtooth pattern, with Kyoto-style renji-goshi lattice fronts. It is worth arriving in daylight to walk the quarter before the stalls open. Kuroe Nurimono-kan, a converted lacquerware merchant’s building on the same street, is a useful anchor point.

Tickets and Admission

Free. Food, drink and goods are paid per item.

If you miss August, the district’s other major event is the Kishu Lacquerware Festival, held on the first Saturday and Sunday of November at Onzanso Garden, with a wholesalers’ market, maki-e gold-lacquer workshops and a simultaneous household-goods fair.

Tips for Visitors

Come early and walk the quarter first. The sawtooth street plan and lattice facades are the real attraction, and they are easier to see before the crowd arrives.

Book accommodation well ahead. 14 August is peak Obon travel across Japan and Wakayama-area rooms fill early.

Consider a guided walk. Kainan City’s storyteller volunteers run guided tours of Kuroe from around ¥1,000 per hour, bookable through the city’s Industrial Promotion Division at least a month in advance.
