Overview
Hachinohe Enburi is one of Aomori’s great winter festivals and a nationally designated intangible folk cultural property. Troupes perform slow, deliberate dances that act out the farming cycle, praying for a good harvest, their heads crowned with tall lacquered eboshi shaped like horse heads. It is a quieter, more solemn festival than the summer matsuri, rich in tradition and easy to enjoy up close.
When & Where
The 2026 festival runs February 17 to 20. It opens with a dawn dedication at Chojasan Shinra Shrine, followed by a mass performance in central Hachinohe where more than thirty troupes dance at once, plus intimate ‘Oniwa Enburi’ sessions in historic garden settings. Nearest station: Hon-Hachinohe Station for the downtown events.
Getting There
Reach Hachinohe Station by Tohoku Shinkansen, then transfer to the local line for Hon-Hachinohe, beside the downtown performance area. The main street events are free to watch; arrive early for the morning shrine dedication and the massed daytime dance.

Tickets & Access
Street and shrine performances are free to watch. The indoor ‘Oniwa Enburi’ garden sessions, which include refreshments, are ticketed and may require advance booking.
Tips for Visitors
February in Aomori is snowy and cold, so dress warmly and wear boots with grip. The massed daytime performance is the best single spectacle, while the garden sessions offer the closest view of the costumes and footwork.
