Overview
Held for nearly 400 years, Kunchi blends Japanese, Chinese and Dutch influences reflecting Nagasaki’s trading history. Rotating neighbourhood groups perform dragon dances (ja-odori), spinning ship floats and other dedications.
When and Where
The festival is held every year on October 7–9, centred on Suwa Shrine and several venues around Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture.
Getting There
Suwa Shrine is a short walk from the Suwa Jinja-mae tram stop; Nagasaki is served by tram from JR Nagasaki Station.
What to Expect
Energetic dragon dances, twirling decorated floats representing ships and whales, and crowds shouting “motte-koi!” to call performers back for an encore.
Tips for Visitors
Prime venues (Suwa Shrine, Otabisho) require paid tickets that sell out early; you can also catch free “niwa-saki” street performances around town. October is pleasant but book lodging ahead.
