Martial-arts offerings by day and towers of lanterns and fireworks by night mark the most important festival at one of Japan’s holiest shrines.
Overview
The Atsuta Festival (Shobu-sai) is the most important annual rite of Atsuta Jingu, the venerable Nagoya shrine that enshrines one of the imperial regalia. Held each June, it combines solemn Shinto ceremony with martial-arts dedications and an evening of illuminated lantern towers and fireworks. Locals consider it the start of summer, and it draws large, festive crowds in traditional summer dress.
When & Where
The festival takes place annually on 5 June, so in 2026 it falls on a Friday. The main ceremony begins in the morning at Atsuta Jingu in southern Nagoya, martial-arts and performing-arts offerings run during the day, giant lantern towers are lit in the evening, and around 1,000 fireworks are launched from the adjacent Jingu Park at roughly 7:40 pm. Nearest station: Meitetsu Jingumae, a few minutes’ walk away.
Getting There
Atsuta Jingu is easy to reach within Nagoya: it is about a 3-minute walk from Meitetsu Jingumae Station, and also close to JR Atsuta Station and the Meijo subway line. From Nagoya Station, allow around 15 minutes by train. Expect heavy foot traffic in the evening, and use an IC card for smooth transfers.
What to Expect
Daytime offerings include kendo, sumo, judo and traditional music within the wooded shrine grounds. After dark, five great kentomakiwara lantern towers, each hung with hundreds of lanterns, glow at the shrine entrances, and fireworks light the sky over Jingu Park. Rows of food stalls and visitors in yukata complete the summer-festival atmosphere.
Tickets & Access
Admission is free; you can enter the shrine grounds and watch the ceremonies and fireworks without a ticket. Some fireworks-viewing areas in Jingu Park may fill early. Arrive with time to spare and be prepared for dense evening crowds.
Tips for Visitors
Come in the late afternoon to see the martial-arts dedications and secure a spot for the lantern towers and fireworks. Wearing a yukata adds to the experience. Combine your visit with the Atsuta Jingu treasure hall and nearby Nagoya sights.
