Overview
Yanagawa Hina Matsuri Sagemon Meguri is a springtime celebration of Hinamatsuri, the girls’ day festival, in the willow-lined canal town of Yanagawa in southern Fukuoka. Alongside the usual tiered doll displays, local families hang colourful ornaments called sagemon—stitched silk charms and cloth balls strung in long cascades—to wish for the healthy growth of their daughters. Shops, homes and public halls across town join in, turning the whole community into an open-air gallery.
When & Where
In 2026 the event runs from February 11 through April 3, with the highlight Ohina-sama Suijo Parade (a water parade of girls in kimono aboard canal boats) held on March 15. Displays appear throughout central Yanagawa. Nearest station: Nishitetsu Yanagawa.
Getting There
From Fukuoka, board a Nishitetsu limited express at Nishitetsu-Fukuoka (Tenjin) bound for Omuta and ride about 50 minutes to Nishitetsu Yanagawa. The doll displays and the famous donko-bune boat piers are a short walk or bus ride from the station. An IC card such as Sugoca or Nimoca works on Nishitetsu trains and city buses.
What to Expect
A classic sagemon arrangement hangs dozens of small handmade figures—cranes, flowers, sea bream and other auspicious motifs—in symmetrical strands, often flanking a pair of larger thread balls. Visitors can pair the displays with a leisurely donko-bune punt along the old moats, and around the season nagashi-bina, in which paper dolls are floated downstream to carry away misfortune, is also performed.
Tickets & Access
Viewing the sagemon displays around town is free. The canal boat cruises are a paid activity, typically booked at the boarding piers, and some special evening events may carry a charge. No reservation is needed simply to walk the display route.
Tips for Visitors
Combine your visit with a canal cruise for the best sense of the water town, and allow time to wander the side streets where smaller shops show their own displays. Weekends around the March 15 water parade are busiest; a weekday visit is calmer. Spring weather is changeable, so bring a light jacket.
