Overview
The Iizaka Kenka Matsuri, held at Hachiman Shrine in the onsen town of Iizaka, is counted among Japan’s three great ‘fighting’ festivals and has run for more than three centuries. Teams haul six large drum floats, or taiko-dai, and repeatedly ram them together in front of the shrine to a thunderous beat. It is a fierce, adrenaline-charged autumn festival that gives thanks for the harvest.
When & Where
The festival is held on the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday of October, which in 2026 falls on October 2 to 4. The climactic float clashes take place on the Saturday evening, from around 20:30, at Hachiman Shrine in Iizaka Onsen, Fukushima City. Nearest station: Iizaka Onsen Station.
Getting There
From Fukushima Station, take the Fukushima Kotsu Iizaka Line to its terminus at Iizaka Onsen, about 25 minutes, then walk a few minutes to Hachiman Shrine. The town is a hot-spring resort, so it is easy to pair the festival with an overnight soak.

Tickets & Access
The festival is free to watch. The shrine grounds get extremely crowded once the floats enter, so arrive well before the main Saturday clashes.
Tips for Visitors
Saturday evening is the highlight but also the busiest; stake out a position early. Nights are cool by October, so dress warmly, and consider staying in an Iizaka ryokan to enjoy the onsen after the action.
