Overview
The Kumano Fireworks Festival is a roughly 300-year-old display on the Kumano coast of southern Mie, originally staged as a memorial rite during Obon. About 10,000 fireworks are launched over Shichirimihama, a long pebble beach, including shells fired from boats and set pieces that skim the sea. Its history and dramatic coastal setting make it one of the most respected fireworks events in the Kansai and Tokai region.

The 2026 festival is scheduled for August 17, roughly 19:10 to 21:30, over Shichirimihama Beach in Kumano City, Mie. Because of its exposed seaside location, postponement dates are set in case of bad weather, so confirm before travelling. Nearest station: Kumanoshi on the JR Kisei Main Line.
Getting There
Kumano is on the JR Kisei Main Line along the Kii Peninsula’s coast; the beach is a short walk from Kumanoshi Station. The area is remote, several hours by train from Nagoya or Osaka, so many spectators arrive by tour bus or stay locally. Expect heavy demand on trains and roads on the festival evening.
What to Expect
Highlights include a signature run of phoenix-shaped fireworks stretched along about two kilometres of shoreline, shells launched from boats offshore, and blasts that appear to bloom on the water’s surface. The pebble beach gives an unobstructed, wide-angle view, and the sound echoing off the coast adds to the impact of the finale.

General viewing from the beach is free, though paid reserved seating is typically sold for prime areas; details and any tickets are announced closer to the date. Because the venue is exposed and popular, arrive early to claim space. Bring a mat for the pebbles and everything you need, as facilities are limited.

Check the weather and postponement notices before setting out, as seaside conditions can force a change of date. Arrive in the afternoon to secure a spot, bring a cushion for the stony beach, and plan your return travel in advance given the remote location.
