Himeji greets summer with a festival where anyone in a yukata earns perks, from free castle entry to cheaper buses.
Overview
The Himeji Yukata Matsuri is the annual festival of Osakabe Shrine and one of the castle city’s signature early-summer events. Held as the town’s traditional welcome to the warm season, it fills the streets around the shrine, Jonan Park and the shopping arcades with visitors dressed in yukata, the light cotton kimono of summer. Food stalls, local shops and a relaxed evening mood define the two-day celebration.
When & Where
The 2026 festival runs June 20-21, from around 16:30 to 21:30 each day. Activities spread across Osakabe Shrine, Jonan Park and central Himeji, within sight of Himeji Castle. Nearest station: Himeji, a short walk north to the castle and festival area.
Getting There
Himeji is a major stop on the JR Sanyo Line and Shinkansen, about 40 minutes from Kobe and an hour from Osaka. From Himeji Station, walk north along the main avenue toward the castle to reach the festival streets. The compact, walkable centre makes it easy to move between the shrine, park and arcades.
What to Expect
The first day features a children’s yukata parade from Himeji Castle’s Sannomaru Square to Jonan Park. Rows of food stalls and game booths line the shrine approach and shopping streets, and much of the crowd turns out in colourful summer kimono. Wearing a yukata unlocks perks such as free admission to Himeji Castle and half-price local bus fares.
Tickets & Access
The festival itself is free to enjoy. The notable bonus is that yukata-clad visitors receive discounts and free entry at Himeji Castle and nearby attractions during the event; rental yukata are available in town if you want to take part. Streets are flat and easy to walk, though busy in the evening.
Tips for Visitors
Rent and wear a yukata to make the most of the free-entry perks. Evenings are the liveliest time, so arrive in the late afternoon. Pair the festival with a daytime visit to Himeji Castle, Japan’s finest surviving feudal fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
