Overview
The Kobe Matsuri is the port city’s largest civic festival, a free May celebration of Kobe’s cosmopolitan character. The centrepiece is a long parade of samba dancers, marching bands, dragon dances and floats representing the city’s many international communities. It is energetic and inclusive rather than religious, reflecting Kobe’s history as one of Japan’s earliest open ports.
When & Where
The 53rd Kobe Matsuri takes place on Sunday, May 17, 2026, roughly 11:00 to 16:30. The main parade winds along Kyomachi-suji and Sannomiya Chuo-dori through the former Foreign Settlement, with stages and food areas nearby. Nearest station: Sannomiya in central Kobe.
Getting There
Sannomiya is the hub for JR, Hankyu, Hanshin and subway lines, about 20 minutes from Osaka and under an hour from Kyoto. The parade route and stages are within easy walking distance of the station. Because central streets are closed, follow signage and expect a festive, crowded but well-organised atmosphere.
What to Expect
The parade is the highlight, with vivid samba teams, brass bands and community groups filling the boulevards for hours. Around it, multiple stages host music and dance, and street-food stalls line the settlement district. The mix of Latin rhythms, Japanese drumming and international performers gives Kobe Matsuri a distinctive multicultural energy.
Tickets & Access
The festival is completely free: the parade, stages and market areas are all open to the public with no ticket required. Some vantage points along the parade fill early, but the route is long enough that space can usually be found. The central location is flat and accessible.
Tips for Visitors
Stake out a parade spot before late morning for the best views of the samba teams. Bring sun protection and water for the midday heat, and explore Kobe’s Chinatown or harbour once the parade winds down. Public transport is the easiest way in and out on the day.
