Otaru Snow Light Path 2027: Canal-Side Candles in a Snowy Port Town

Snow candles glowing along the Otaru Canal during the Snow Light Path

Hokkaido · HokkaidoIllumination

The historic canal town of Otaru glows with thousands of handmade snow candles in one of Hokkaido’s most romantic winter traditions.

Overview

Otaru Snow Light Path drapes this old merchant port in soft candlelight for just over a week each February. Snow lanterns line the famous canal and the former Temiya railway, while floating glass-buoy candles bob on the water. Much of the event is run by volunteers, and the intimate, low-key mood is a gentle contrast to the scale of Sapporo’s festival nearby.

When & Where

The next edition is scheduled for February 6 to 13, 2027. Candles are lit in the evenings, roughly from 17:00 until 21:00. The two main venues are the Otaru Canal and the former Japan National Railways Temiya Line. Nearest station: JR Otaru Station, about a 10-minute walk from the canal.

Getting There

Otaru sits about 30 to 45 minutes from Sapporo by JR rapid train on the Hakodate Main Line, making it an easy evening or day trip. From Otaru Station, walk downhill toward the canal; the Temiya Line site is a short further walk and is popular with international volunteers.

What to Expect

  • Thousands of snow candles and lanterns lining the streets
  • Floating ‘ukidama’ glass-buoy candles on the canal
  • Snow statues along the former Temiya railway line
  • Warmly lit historic stone warehouses as a backdrop
  • Food and sweets stalls, plus walk-and-eat ticket deals

Tickets & Access

The event is free to walk through. Optional meal tickets are sold during the festival so visitors can sample local sushi, sweets and noodles as they stroll.

Tips for Visitors

The canal is the signature photo spot but gets crowded early evening; the Temiya Line venue is quieter and just as pretty. Roads are slippery, so wear proper snow footwear and bring gloves for handling cold railings while shooting photos.
