Nagasaki Night Market 2026: Summer Evenings on the Nakashima River

On four August evenings, food stalls run by the old downtown neighbourhoods line both banks of the Nakashima River beneath Nagasaki’s floodlit Spectacles Bridge.
Overview
Nakashimagawa Natsu-Fuzei ~ Nagasaki Yoichi (中島川夏風情～長崎夜市) translates roughly as “Nakashima River summer ambience — Nagasaki night market”. It is a street market rather than a festival in the ritual sense: stalls, a stage, lanterns, and people strolling the riverside in yukata.
The setting does most of the work. The Nakashima River runs through central Nagasaki under a cluster of historic stone arch bridges, of which Meganebashi — the “Spectacles Bridge”, so called because its twin arches and their reflection form a pair of glasses — is the best known.
When and Where
The market runs on two weekends in August, bracketing Obon. In 2026 those were Saturday 1 and Sunday 2 August, then Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 August, each evening from 17:00 to 21:00.
Stalls line both banks from Fukurobashi through Meganebashi to the fish market, with a stage on the plaza in front of Meganebashi. Separately, the Meganebashi illumination runs the whole of August, 18:00–22:00 — so the bridge is lit even on nights when the market is not on.
The market goes ahead in light rain and is cancelled in heavy rain.
What to Expect
- Around 200 paper lanterns strung along the riverside, with Meganebashi floodlit below.
- Stalls run by the youth associations of the old downtown wards — Ginyamachi, Migiyamachi, Kojiyamachi, Hachimanmachi, Okeyamachi, Uonomachi, Nishihamamachi, Uwamachi — plus civic groups and local shops.
- A stage programme that changes each night. In 2026 it included the Nagasaki City Sumo Jinku Society and Smart Object (1 Aug), guitarist Maeda Daiki (2 Aug), the Tahitian dance troupe Noanoa, singer Tanaka Haruna and the Ginyamachi Shachi Daiko drummers (22 Aug), and Moka Dance School, Jellyfish and MilkShake (23 Aug).
- Yukata are encouraged but not required; plenty of visitors wear one.
Admission and Tickets
There is no admission fee — it is an open street market. You pay at the stalls. No reservation or ticket is needed for the stage programme either.
Tips for Visitors
Come at 17:00 for the stalls but stay past sunset, when the lanterns and the bridge lighting come on and the whole stretch changes character. The tram is the sensible way in: Meganebashi and Nigiwaibashi stops both put you within a couple of minutes’ walk. If you miss the market weekends entirely, the bridge illumination still runs nightly through August.
