Kanto · IbarakiFestival

Mito’s biggest summer festival fills the city’s main avenue with dancers, floats and portable shrines over a lively August weekend.

Overview

The Mito Komon Festival is the largest summer celebration in Mito, the capital of Ibaraki. It is named after Tokugawa Mitsukuni, the revered local lord popularly known as Mito Komon and familiar to Japanese audiences from long-running television dramas.

The main festival takes over central Mito with parades, dance troupes and mikoshi, drawing crowds from across the prefecture.

When & Where

The 2026 main festival is held on August 1 and 2, with the associated Kairakuen fireworks staged separately on July 25. The action runs along National Route 50 through the centre of Mito.

Nearest station: JR Mito Station.

Getting There

Mito is about 65 minutes from Ueno on the Joban Line limited express. From JR Mito Station’s north exit it is a short walk into the festival zone along Route 50. An IC card works for the whole journey.

What to Expect

The closed main avenue hosts waves of dance parades, carnival-style performances, mikoshi carried by shouting teams and thousands of participants over the two days. Food stalls and stage events keep the city centre busy into the evening.

Tickets & Access

Admission is free. Pair the festival weekend with a stroll through central Mito or a visit to nearby Kairakuen garden.

Tips for Visitors

Evenings bring the liveliest parades and cooler air than the fierce midday heat, so time your visit for later in the day. Stay hydrated, and check the current programme, as the exact parade order and stages vary year to year.
