Shikoku · EhimeFestival
Matsuyama’s ancient hot-spring quarter throws a boisterous three-day spring festival around the landmark Dogo Onsen Honkan.
Overview
Dogo Onsen, said to be among Japan’s oldest hot springs, welcomes spring with a lively festival centred on the wooden Dogo Onsen Honkan bathhouse. Over three days in mid-March, historical-costume parades, portable-shrine processions carried by local women, taiko drumming and a spirited tug ritual fill the streets and arcades around Dogo. It is the town’s biggest annual event and a colourful counterpoint to the usual quiet soak.
When & Where
19–21 March 2026, around Dogo Onsen Honkan and Dogo Station in Matsuyama, Ehime, with some evening events. Nearest stop: the Dogo Onsen tram terminus.
Getting There
From central Matsuyama, ride the Iyotetsu tram to the Dogo Onsen terminus (about 20–25 minutes); the bathhouse is a short walk through the covered arcade. Matsuyama is reached by air, or by train from Honshu via the Seto-Ohashi route.
What to Expect
Highlights include the opening hot-spring prayer, mochi throwing, brass bands and a spirited mikoshi procession. Rougher ritual moments — teams heaving against one another — sit alongside gentler traditional performances, all wrapped in the retro atmosphere of the Dogo quarter.
Tickets & Access
The street festivities are free to watch. Bathing in Dogo Onsen Honkan and its sister facilities is ticketed as usual, and the historic Honkan can be very busy during the festival.
Tips for Visitors
Ride the Botchan Ressha steam-style tram for atmosphere. Combine festival-watching with an early-morning or late-evening bath to dodge peak crowds, and browse the arcade’s local snacks and crafts.
