Tokushima’s Awa Odori is Japan’s most famous dance festival, when hundreds of troupes fill the streets for four nights of exuberant, rhythmic dancing.
Overview
Dating back over 400 years, Awa Odori sees groups (ren) of costumed dancers and musicians parade to the two-beat rhythm of shamisen, drums and flutes, chanting “A yatto sa!” Spectators are welcome to join the impromptu dancing.
When and Where
The festival runs every year on August 12–15 across central Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture, with dancing on streets and in paid grandstand arenas each evening.
Getting There
The dance zones are a short walk from JR Tokushima Station; Tokushima is reachable by bus from Osaka/Kobe or by air/rail via Takamatsu.
What to Expect
Wave after wave of synchronized dancers — women in elegant amigasa hats on tiptoe, men in dynamic crouched steps — filling both ticketed arenas and free street stages late into the night.
Tips for Visitors
Paid arena seats guarantee a great view of the top troupes; free演舞場 and street corners are livelier and spontaneous. Book accommodation far ahead — the city fills up completely.
