Gaina is local dialect for enormous, and the town uses the word for its summer festival without much exaggeration.
Overview
Yonago sits on the coast at the western end of Tottori, in the shadow of Mount Daisen, and the Gaina Matsuri is the biggest thing that happens there all year. The 2026 edition was the 53rd. It is a postwar civic festival rather than a shrine rite: three days of drumming, dancing, parades, stage acts and market stalls that spread from the station across the city centre to Minatoyama Park.
For a visitor it is a good introduction to the San-in region, the quieter side of western Japan facing the Sea of Japan, where summer festivals are large but not overwhelmed by tourists.
When and where
In 2026 the festival ran Friday 7 to Sunday 9 August, opening with an eve festival, building to the main day, and finishing with the fireworks. Around 8,000 shells are launched over Yonago harbour for the finale, set to music. The dates shift with the calendar each year, usually falling in the first half of August.
Getting there
Yonago is the rail hub of the region: it is on the Sanin main line and the terminus of the Hakubi line, which connects to the Sanyo Shinkansen at Okayama in about two hours. Yonago Kitaro Airport, named after the manga created nearby, has flights from Tokyo. The main festival area is within walking distance of Yonago station, and extra services run on festival nights.
What to expect
The signature sight is the mando, tall lantern-hung poles carried and spun by teams, alongside big taiko drum ensembles. There are parades through the shopping streets, dance troupes, a market and food stalls across several sites. The fireworks over the harbour are the reason the last night is the busiest; the water gives the display a mirrored second half that inland festivals cannot match.
Admission and practicalities
Free to attend, with no ticketing. The harbour front has no reserved seating, so arrive early on the final night for a place at the rail. Because the events are spread over several venues, it is worth picking up a programme at the station information desk on arrival.
Tips for visitors
Stay in Kaike Onsen, a seaside hot-spring district ten minutes from the city, if you want a bath after the fireworks. Mount Daisen is 40 minutes away and worth a day either side. Yonago is also the gateway to Sakaiminato, one of the largest fishing ports in Japan, where the seafood market makes a good morning trip.
