Ashikaga Wisteria Festival 2026: Great Wisteria at Ashikaga Flower Park

Cascading purple wisteria at Ashikaga Flower Park

Kanto · TochigiFlower

A 160-year-old wisteria and a glowing tunnel of blossoms make this Tochigi park one of Japan’s most photographed spring destinations.

Overview

Ashikaga Flower Park in Tochigi is famous the world over for its wisteria, headlined by a single tree more than 160 years old whose trellis spreads across roughly a thousand square metres. Its Fuji no Hana Monogatari, or Great Wisteria Festival, is one of the Kanto region’s signature spring events.

The park was named by CNN as one of the world’s dream travel destinations, and the evening illuminations turn the flowers into a floating canopy of light.

When & Where

The 2026 festival runs from April 11 to May 20, with evening illuminations from April 15. The great wisteria typically peaks from mid to late April, followed by the white-wisteria tunnel and, at the season’s close, the yellow kibana wisteria.

Nearest station: JR Ashikaga Flower Park Station.

Getting There

The park has its own JR Ryomo Line stop, Ashikaga Flower Park Station, about three minutes’ walk away; from Tokyo it is roughly 1.5 to 2 hours via the Tohoku Shinkansen to Oyama and a transfer. Because bloom stages change fast, buy tickets on the day so pricing matches what is actually flowering.

What to Expect

Wisteria in pale pink, violet, white and yellow bloom in sequence across the park, with the vast central trellis as the centrepiece. After dark, thousands of lights illuminate the cascading racemes, a display that regularly ranks among Japan’s best night-time flower shows.

Tickets & Access

Admission is charged and varies with the flowering stage, typically in the range of about 1,200 to 2,300 yen for adults by day, with separate evening pricing. Check the park’s official site for the current rate before you go.

Tips for Visitors

Weekends at peak bloom are extremely busy; visit on a weekday, or arrive at opening or stay for the illumination to beat the crowds. Bring a tripod-free plan for photos, as the trellis area gets tightly packed.
