On the anniversary of their famous vendetta, Ako honours the 47 loyal samurai with a costumed procession through town.
Overview
The Ako Gishisai commemorates the 47 ronin, the masterless samurai of Ako who avenged their lord in one of Japan’s most famous true stories of loyalty. Held each December 14, the anniversary of their 1703 raid, it is the largest annual event in the seaside city of Ako on the Hyogo-Okayama border. The centrepiece is a vivid historical parade re-enacting the loyal retainers and their era.

The festival is held on December 14, 2026, with events through the day around Oishi Shrine and central Ako, culminating in the Gishi parade. Ako lies on the coast at the western edge of Hyogo. Nearest station: Banshu-Ako on the JR Ako Line.
Getting There
Reach Banshu-Ako Station on the JR Ako Line, accessible from Himeji and Okayama. From the station it is a short walk to Oishi Shrine and the castle grounds where events are held. As a December festival in a smaller city, it draws devoted crowds, so arrive early for parade viewing spots.
What to Expect
The highlight is the Gishi procession, in which participants portray the 47 ronin, a daimyo’s retinue, and Ako maidens dressed as princesses carried in rickshaws, accompanied by a children’s brass band and staged sword fights. Ceremonies at Oishi Shrine, which enshrines the loyal samurai, and displays around Ako Castle deepen the historical atmosphere.
Tickets & Access
The festival and parade are free to watch from public streets and the shrine grounds. There is no general ticketing. Some nearby museums and memorial sites related to the 47 ronin charge separate admission and are worth visiting on the day. Central Ako is flat and easy to walk.
Tips for Visitors
Dress warmly for a December day by the sea and arrive early to line the parade route. Visit Oishi Shrine and the Ako Gishi memorial sites to understand the story behind the pageantry. Combine the trip with Ako Castle’s grounds and the town’s salt-making heritage.
